The cap is cup-shaped then saddle-shaped, with a light grey to pale brown internal surface, the external being light grey to pale brown, with a well differentiated stem, smooth, concolorous to cap or lighter.

The fertile surface is smooth.

It grows on the ground, in broad-leaved and mixed woods, on clayey soils.

The fruiting period takes place from June to December.
Dimensions: width of cap approximately 2 cm (between 1.5 and 2.5 cm)
  total height approximately 5 cm (between 2 and 7.5 cm)


Helvella ephippium is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is quite rare, more generally speaking .
