The fruiting body is tongue-shaped or club-shaped, black, with a well differentiated stem.
The fertile surface is smooth.
It grows on the ground, in coniferous forests, sometimes also with broad-leaved trees, on a rather acid soil, with beech, oaks.
The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
