The fruiting body is star-shaped with 6-10 pointed rays, often curving back with earth stuck underneath, and a spore sac in the centre, with whitish to light beige rays, the spore sac being grey-brown, without stem.

The fertile surface is internal: the spores are released as dust when mature. The spore print is light brown.

It grows on the ground, in broad-leaved and coniferous woods, with spruce.

The fruiting period takes place from July to December.
