The fruiting body is disk- or top-shaped at first, then brain-like, arranged in lobes and folds, black to dark brown, without stem.
The fertile surface is smooth.
It grows on wood, on dead wood of broad-leaved trees, on oaks.
The fruiting period takes place all year long.
