The fruiting body is spherical, smooth, outer skin falling away in flakes at maturity, white then lead-grey under the outer skin.
The fertile surface is internal: the spores are released as dust when mature.
It grows on the ground, in meadows, pathsides.
The fruiting period takes place from June to December.
