The fruiting body is flat cushion-shaped, smooth and wavy like a carpet, with the margin sometimes upturned, with a brown-red to black internal surface, the external surface being white to ochre.
The fertile surface is smooth.
It grows on wood, on burnt ground, on coniferous debris.
The fruiting period takes place from April to December.
