The cap is saddle-shaped, convoluted, and irregularly lobed, with a grey to blackish internal surface, the external being grey, with a well differentiated stem, hitish to grey-brown, deeply furrowed or veined.

The fertile surface is smooth.

It grows on the ground, in damp deciduous or coniferous woods, in pathsides, parks, on burnt ground.

The fruiting period takes place from June to December.
