The cap is deeply cup-shaped, supported by the ridge-like ends of the stem up to the top, with an ash-grey to brownish grey internal surface, the external being whitish, with a well differentiated stem, short, veined or furrowed, with protruding ridges assembled in veins.

The fertile surface is smooth.

It grows on the ground, in broad-leaved and coniferous woods, on a rather calcareous soil.

The fruiting period takes place from June to September.

Helvella costifera is still unreported so far in the forest of Rambouillet, and is quite rare, more generally speaking .
