The fruiting body is star-shaped with 5-7 rays, curving back underneath to form a sauce, and at its centre, a spore sac without stalk but with a collar, with beige to red-brown rays, the spore sac being pale grey-brown, without stem.

The fertile surface is internal: the spores are released as dust when mature. The spore print is dark brown.

It grows on the ground, more often in broad-leaved woods, also in parks and coniferous woods.

The fruiting period takes place from August to December.
